India Bans 25 Streaming Apps Over Obscenity and Child Protection Concerns
India's Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has ordered the removal of 25 streaming platforms, including popular adult-oriented apps Ullu and ALTT, citing violations of child safety norms and obscenity regulations. The ban leverages the Information Technology Act of 2000 and IT Rules of 2021, following pressure from child rights advocates and parliamentary committees.
Despite enforcement directives to major app stores and internet providers, some banned services remain accessible through sideloading or third-party platforms. The MOVE highlights the tension between regulatory oversight and persistent consumer demand for such content, as streaming traffic continues to grow unabated.
